Stove-top Honey Glazed Ham

The best part of the holiday season is joining together with friends and family to enjoy a wonderful feast. My family tends to enjoy ham more than turkey. Really, we like turkey too so I usually make a Honey Glazed Ham and this Slow Cooker Turkey Breast so we can have both.

This ham recipe is great because the glaze is really easy to prepare. We keep it simple with pineapple juice, honey and mustard for a sweet tangy sauce. I add just a touch of sugar to achieve that sticky syrup consistency. But, you can definitely omit the sugar if you prefer.

I’m confused. At the top you say Dijon mustard. In the recipe it says stone ground mustard. What is the difference and which did you use?

    • PINEAPPLE HONEY GLAZED HAM RECIPE + WonkyWonderful (14)Nicole Harris says

Hi Joanna, I used a stone ground dijon mustard. Really, your favorite type of mustard will work. Maybe just steer clear of plain yellow mustard. Happy Holidays!

Sure. The EXACT recipe has been online for over 5 years. You keep telling yourself and others its yours. I didn’t expect to see my comment on your website because its uncomfortable. People make mistakes but not saying “Gee I forgot to credit someone. Its a great recipe but I made it my own by ……” In graduate school you would be on academic suspension for plagiarism Merry Christmas to you also. .

People come up with similar recipes all of the time. A friend of mine was really upset when a cake recipe she came up with was brought to a party by another friend who called it “Better Than Sex Cake.” My friend did not know that better than sex cake already existed because she honestly came up with that same combination of ingredients in her own kitchen. Maureen, just RELAX and eat ham.

FAQs

Do you put the glaze on a ham before you cook it or after you cook it? ›

The glaze should not be applied until the final hour to 30 minutes, in order to avoid burning the sugars. What you're going to do with the glaze ingredients is just combine most of them into a paste, and then apply it to the ham. After that, the heat in your oven will take care of everything.

What happens when you put fresh pineapple on ham? ›

Don't bother decorating the outside of your ham with fresh pineapple, as the enzymes in the fruit will turn the meat to mush. Instead, add slices to the pan in the final moments of glazing, which burnishes the meat's diamond scoring that mimics a pineapple's quilted peel.

What is honeybaked ham glaze made of? ›

Heat the honey, corn syrup, and butter in a double boiler to make the glaze. Brush the glaze over the ham and bake in a foil-lined pan for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, brushing every 15 minutes or so with the glaze. Broil the ham for a few minutes before removing it from the oven.

How do you make ham taste better? ›

Peach preserves, hot pepper jelly, and maple syrup work as sweet bases for glazes that add sheen as well as distinct flavor. Tasty additions such as aromatics, herbs, and spices switch up a traditional ham and make it truly memorable.

How do you get glaze to stick to ham? ›

After the ham has cooked for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, brush the surface with some of the glaze. Then pop it back into the oven, uncovered, for another 20 minutes or so. Pull it out and brush on more glaze, then pop it back in the oven. Then pull it out and brush on more glaze!

Why did my ham turn to mush? ›

Fresh pineapple is so acidic it will actually cause the ham to break down into mush. Stick with canned pineapple, but apples and peaches can be fresh.

Why can't you bake with fresh pineapple? ›

Bromelain cuts the protein chains and keeps the product from jelling properly. What can you do to overcome this challenge? Try using canned pineapple in place of fresh fruit. Canned pineapple has been heated causing the bromelain to be less reactive.

Does pineapple take the salt out of ham? ›

“Typically, when you're doing a country ham, you need something sweet to neutralize the ham's saltiness, and pineapple does this really well.” And it's not just me and Benton: Pineapple shows up in ham recipes—atop the ham, in glazes slicking the ham, in shield-your-eyes versions of fried rice—the world over.

Why not heat Honey Baked Ham? ›

We recommend that you do not heat Honey Baked Hams® - they are made to enjoy right from the refrigerator. If you prefer your meat warmed, gently heat on low heat 275°F for 10 min per pound only by the slice, do not heat the entire ham. Heating may cause the meat to dry out and lose flavor.

What makes Honey Baked Ham better? ›

First, our Honey Baked Ham products start with a rigorous selection process, then the meat is smoked for up to 24 hours with our special blend of hardwood chips. The result is that every rich and flavorful bite, and every slice, is fall-apart-in-your-mouth perfect. There's something about that sweet, crunchy glaze.

How do you thicken honey ham glaze? ›

Begin heating the ham while you prepare the glaze on the stovetop. This thickens the glaze and allows the flavors to blend. When the ham has about 30 minutes remaining, use a pastry brush to apply the glaze (making sure to drip some glaze between the slices for extra flavor).

What keeps ham moist? ›

Cover it in Foil

The foil traps steam and keeps the meat moist. You don't have to wrap the aluminum foil tightly around the ham because you'll want to be able to check on it later. Instead, simply cover the ham with the foil, tucking it under the lip of the roasting pan.

What ham has the most flavor? ›

Buy bone-in ham. Yes, the bone is a little more work to cut around, but the meat is more flavorful and the hambone can be used to flavor soups and stews. Check the label. City hams can be artificially plumped up with water or solutions, but this dilutes the flavor, so look for one with no added water or juices.

Does cooking a ham longer make it more tender? ›

That's for an eight to 10-pound bone-in ham. Editor's Tip: For a fall-apart tender ham, let it cook longer; 10 to 12 hours on low.

How do you heat a fully cooked ham with glaze? ›

Bake at 325F for 16-20 minutes per pound, until a meat thermometer registers 135F. Unwrap the ham and apply the glaze; increase the heat to 400F and bake for 15-20 minutes longer until the glaze is burnished. It's difficult to grill a whole or half ham because the method uses such dry high heat.

How do you use the glaze packet that comes with the ham? ›

Whether you heat your spiral ham in the slow cooker or oven, all you have to do is open the glaze packet and apply it 30 minutes before your ham is finished cooking. By the time it's ready to serve, you'll have a satiny-glazed ham without any of the time or effort it takes to make a ham glaze.

Is glazed ham precooked? ›

The thing with glazed ham is that it doesn't actually need to be cooked because it's already cooked. It's just about getting that glaze just right! Cool for 2 – 3 hours on the counter until you can barely feel warmth when you hover your hand over the surface.

What is the best way to cook ham covered or uncovered? ›

If you don't cover your ham while cooking it will quickly dry out. Instead: Put some aluminum foil over your ham while it's cooking. It is recommended that the ham is covered for at least half of the cooking process and only removed during the last half when you glaze it.
